Author Visits, Storytelling, and Workshops

I'm a writer and former school librarian from Richmond, Texas.

Author Visit I thought your presentation was great! It was obvious from the very beginning of your presentation that you love children and have a real passion for providing them with a quality experience. --Heather Hess, Librarian, Hawley, PA

These are the two programs I am offering this year. I can adapt them to your needs.

Where Do You Get Your Ideas? (PK - 2) Young writers get a peek at my writing life--the work and the perks--and the inspiration for each of my five children's books. It includes song, puppets, a Photostory and a Powerpoint with childhood photos, a look at where I write, and more. This session is a fun, interactive way to learn about the job of a writer and how students can use the same process for getting their own ideas for writing.

Thirty-Three Rejections and a Phone Call (Gr. 3-5) Where do you get ideas? How does a story become a book? Do you get to pick your illustrator? Are you rich? This session will take young writers on my journey from story idea through the 33 rejections and revisions to the magical day when an editor called and said, "Yes!" But that was only the beginning. Learners will gain a new understanding of what's behind each book in their library, and will also learn how to get ideas for their own writing.

Fee for Author Visit: $200 per 30-45 minute session plus expenses

Storytelling Programs Pat Miller is gentle in manner and passionate in delivery. Her love of children, books, and reading are manifest in every gesture and word. Through her well-prepared presentations, she makes education fun. --Peter Jacobi, professor emeritus, Indiana University School of Journalism

There are good reasons why oral stories are beloved. Here are my current programs:

Critter Tales Learn about countries like Nigeria, Mexico, and Australia with Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock, Tiddalick and the Drought, Bossy Gallito, and more.

Giggle Tales Action and laughter will have students eager to retell The Squeaky Door, Armadillo Tattletale, Substitute Groundhog, and more.

Hungry Tales Tummies may rumble after hearing Stone Soup, Mama Provi and the Pot of Rice, Teeny Tiny, and more.

Value Tales Students will learn subtle lessons about honesty from The Empty Pot, generosity from A Story, A Story, and more.

Fee for Storytelling: $200 per 30-45 minute session plus expenses

Professional Development for School Librarians
I attended one of your workshops this summer and, in 13 years of teaching, it was the best, most relevant and practical session I've been to. So now I am devouring everything that you have written.
--Margaret Scott, Librarian, Fort Worth, TX

Need professional development for school librarians? I can tailor a session to fit your needs from a one hour conference session to full-day professional development. Here are four workshops I am currently offering:
