The "Hole" Story of a Nonfiction Book from Idea to Publication (K-5)
There's a lot to writing a nonfiction from finding reliable information, solving mysteries, and locating experts. This interactive session is tailored to each grade level --relevant for every child who writes or likes true stories. Where Do You Get Your Ideas? (PK - 2) Student writers and "professionals" have much in common. This session is a fun, interactive way to learn about how to get ideas and convert them into stories for their own writing. Thirty-Three Rejections and a Phone Call (Gr. 3-5) Students hate to rewrite. I show them how rewriting is a super power--one they can develop. I also take them behind the scenes of publication, from idea to book. I can also create a program suited to the needs of your students or a special event (Author's Day, Literacy Night, World Read Aloud Day) |

Testimonials
Pat Miller's engaging and inquiry based presentation kept students and staff engaged, especially as she shared an altered newspaper photograph from the 1940s vs a print from the original source. This was not your "run of the mill" author visit, where the book is read aloud and the author gives anecdotes on writing. Ms Miller showed the students the value and process of double-checking your sources when researching.
